The fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors on the planet. To keep this mass production of cheap clothing up we are paying with our environment and human rights. All this, fed by the “fast fashion”. The path towards minimalism and slow fashion involves switching to brands that meet ethical criteria of production. Therefore, we would like to introduce a sustainable brand called Organic basics.
The greater excuse about eco-friendly brands is the price, (spoiler alert: this is not the case). However, we must be aware that when we pay so little for a shirt, that price is not real. Behind a €3 T-shirt there are people living in poverty and contaminated countries around the factories.
On the other hand, when we buy from small brands, whose ethical values agree with ours, we are supporting people with the same philosophy as we do.
It is a Danish brand focused on minimalist underwear design. Its motto is:
“The fashion industry is a dirty bastard.
We don’t like it that way. We believe in setting higher standards when it comes to sustainable production.”
Their products are made of organic cotton and certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This certificate ensures the organic condition of textile products: ensuring the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer.
In the production of these fibers, wood cellulose is transformed into cellulose fibers with a low impact on the environment, since in the process of spinning in organic solvent, it recycles the process water and reuses the solvent with a percentage of recovery of 99%.
During the manufacturing process, a solvent (N-methylmorpholine) is used to dissolve the pulp of the wood in a viscous solution. This solution is spun in a coagulation bath containing a dilute solution of the solvent. Then the fibers are washed and dried, eliminating the solvent that is regenerated to be reused in new fibers. The result is a fiber free of residual products.
To finish with the fiber, it is given a finish with a resin to achieve greater tensile strength, although depending on the resin and the treatment, other textures or finishes can be obtained such as grinding.
